Hemodialysis therapies
Hemodialysis is the most common treatment option used in most of our dialysis centers. Please talk to your doctor about the treatment options available and which best suits your needs.
Many of our centers offer two different types of hemodialysis:
Standard Hemodialysis (HD)
Hemodialysis is a procedure in which blood is taken out of the body by a dialysis machine and passed through a dialyzer. The dialyzer cleans the waste products along with the removal of extra water and then returns the blood to the body.
High Volume Hemodiafiltration (HDF)
In hemodiafiltration (HDF), excess fluid and waste products are removed from the patient's body through diffusion and convection. A pressure gradient is applied, causing water to move quickly through the highly permeable membrane, 'dragging' many dissolved substances along, including large molecules that standard HD does not clear. High Volume HDF is increasingly recognized as a more advanced dialysis therapy. As the name suggests, High Volume HDF achieves high substitution volumes. High pressure is introduced within the dialyzer, enabling the removal of large amounts of fluid from the blood. The fluid is then replaced by sterile fluid made by the hemodialysis machine. High Volume HDF allows better removal of waste products from the blood, which may contribute to improved survival for patients compared with those receiving standard HD [1][2].

Fluid and nutrition monitoring
To further facilitate the quality of dialysis and clinical management of patients, many Fresenius Kidney Care centers* use a non-invasive, easy and objective measuring device that can assist physicians in the convenient assessment of clinically relevant patient parameters. This can help to determine the amount of fluid in the body, as well as providing an assessment of muscle and fat mass. Keeping these in check will help direct treatment adjustments that are tailored to individual patient needs to ensure an optimal therapy.
